Tamron SP AF 90mm f2.8 Macro 1:1 Di or AF Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D For My Nikon D80?
In your opinion, which is a better lens for beginning macro photography. I’d appreciate pros and cons. This isn’t that big an investment for a lens, but it’s not a small one either. : )
This depends on the type of macro photography you want to do and other uses you develop for the lens. Typically, an exotic or specialty lens is only used for certain shooting situations. The tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro is a true 1:1 reproduction lens, but its focal length makes it just as effective as a portrait lens being that it is a fast prime, giving you a dual purpose. The longer macro also gives the flexibility of a longer focusing distance, allowing you to remain at a safer distance from your subject, instead of being right on top of it. This is my opinion, were I to ever invest in a macro lens myself, I’d prefer the longer one. Aside from that, they’re both fast, both specialized with 1:1 magnification, both have good reviews. Some folks prefer a nikkor over the third party manufacturer, your only other option for a longer macro would be the AF-S nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR [more expensive, but the best option for a longer nikkor lens *with VR*].
